above: the seasons, turning

Oh, hello. Good evening. Do you like things? I hope so, because I have fourteen (14) things for you:

  • You should read these 6,000 incredible words about sailing and know that if that sounds like a tall order to you I would've said that I had absolutely no interest in reading 6,000 words about sailing before I read this.
  • When was the last time you played in the dirt? Probably not recently enough tbh. It's that time of year where I do a lot of digging and soiling (hmmm) and planting and trimming and posting about all of the above. It's incredibly therapeutic and fulfilling imho, maybe give it a try sometime.
  • Holy Wave is a rock 'n' roll band outta Texas with a handful of albums to their name. I only mention that because it's rare I fall in love with a band I've never heard of before but after they've already released several records. At any rate, their new one, i'm DADA, whips ass. RIYL: The Beta Band, Deerhunter, Clinic, indie psych, The Books, krautrock, cool dudes playing guitars nonchalantly
  • "There are so many people I met when I moved to Nashville 15 years ago who had exponentially more talent than I do, but they had no work ethic. Or they thought that, because they were brilliant, they didn’t have to earn their medals. No, bitch, get in the van and go do circles and sleep on fucking floors for six months until 12 people in a room give a shit. That’s the only thing that’s going to be lasting. If you’re waiting on some machine to pump you out, that machine is going to flush your ass too. Talent’s not as rare as people think."
above: our next Fulton County Commissioner in District 4 (hopefully)
  • Early voting starts next week, and I don't have to tell you there's a lot at stake. But I will say this: If you live in Fulton County, you should consider Rohit Malhotra. He's a fantastic, progressive human being who will actually fix Atlanta in all sorts of ways.
  • This bleak and really well done piece about payday loan apps was incredibly eye-opening to me. What in the world are we doing?
  • Stella is a friend of HIFA and she needs some help. Let's help her.
  • "Let’s say I’ve got a couple years left in me. What if I tried to, in the most selfish way possible, alter this so that I have a maximum amount of fun? I decided to scare myself."
  • ICYMI: We had our second biggest fundraiser of all time a couple weeks ago. Thank you for your help with that. I'll share more details about how much debt we abolished once Undue sends over our report.
  • If you, like me, enjoy watching our beloved big man Reacher kill bad guys and sling smh-style dad quips, I must implore you to watch the REACHER spinoff, NEAGLEY. It follows his friend and partner—the titular Frances Neagley—around Chicago as she digs into a creepy farm cult and puts together a team that I hope we get to watch develop for seasons to come. It scratches the same and very specific itch that was left behind after REACHER S4 ended.
  • “A big part of being an actor is just walking through those fears and committing to it. Sometimes you have to be willing to be uncomfortable, or make other people uncomfortable. The only thing that matters is what’s going onscreen. I’ll take the hits in order to do that.”
  • A friend in Richmond is trying to help the kids in his community have a safer Halloween. A couple years ago, we did something very similar in Edgewood, and I can attest that it improved our Halloween situation so much. Maybe drop a few bucks in there if you can?
  • "The thing about using whatever measure of influence you may have to agitate for trans rights is 1) it's free 2) it's the right and moral thing to do 3) perhaps it will help in some small way 4) you get to tell bigots and bullies to eat shit which is among one of life's great pleasures."
  • Hey, do you have any Mexico City recommendations? Especially if you traveled there with kids? If so, please reply to this email. Thanks!
