above: the stunning KC Lenderman stage slash living room at Atlanta Symphony Hall

It's another beautiful evening in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Here are some things you might consider doing or trying or experiencing in the near future:

  • Read a list about my terrifying child: I'm thrilled to announce that I made my McSweeney's Internet Tendency debut today. I've been reading this website for 25 years (!!!), so even just seeing my name in that font is a real delight.
  • Go to a concert: KC Lenderman performed at Atlanta Symphony Hall last week. The stage setup (see above) was classy and cozy. Katie Crutchfield and Jake Lenderman sat next to each other with acoustic guitars and traded off songs all night. For the encore, they covered Lucinda Williams, the Jayhawks, and Kathleen Edwards. The crowd was silent and supportive and smelled great. At one point in between songs a guy a couple rows over very earnestly goes, "Super cool." And when I looked over to get a load of him, the people around him were just nodding. It was super cool. If you live in any of the dozen or so towns they're touring right now, I would humbly insist that you do whatever it takes to get in the room with them.
  • Donate to the EDSBS Charity Bowl: Every year, Spencer Hall and Holly Anderson and a gang of do-goodin', college-football-lovin' volunteers raise a whole lotta money for ATL-based nonprofit New American Pathways so they can continue to support refugee families. The charity bowl kicked off today. Please give as much as you can and tell everyone you know.
  • Read about the best free restaurant bread in America: Listen, I would read Caity Weaver brutally and personally insulting me for 3,000 words no problem, so maybe I'm a little bit biased here. But this is an absolute tour de force, the all-time greatest bread article in the history of journalism.
  • Vote for Jason Esteves on May 19: I doubt that many people who receive this newsletter are planning to vote for a republican in November to serve as the new governor of Georgia. This is good. But what I want to suggest is that you specifically vote for this democrat in the May 19 primary. We have a chance to make some very real change in this state, and Jason Esteves is the way there.
  • Read a book from a vending machine: Some dear friends of HIFA are planning to open Long Story Books in Inman Park later this year, and all of us here at HIFA HQ are extremely excited about that. But! In the meantime, you can go to Krog St. Market at your leisure and buy a book from their vending machine.

That's all for now. More in a month or so probably.

talk soon,
